Navigating Spanish Bureaucracy: A Non-EU Student’s Quick Guide to Securing the Initial TIE

Tired of blog intros that feel like a novel? Us too. Let's skip the fluff and dive straight into the nitty-gritty of getting your TIE as a non-EU student in Spain. No stories, just the essential info you're here for. Let's get started.

When you initially receive a long-term Spanish student visa, it will only be valid for three months. After arriving in Spain, you'll need to get something called the TIE, or Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero. This guide will help you secure your initial TIE. In 99% of cases, your visa will have your NIE number printed on it. If it doesn't, you'll need to apply for a NIE number before applying for your TIE.

1. Register with Local Authorities and Obtain Empadronamiento

Once you've landed in Spain and settled into your apartment, your first administrative step is to register with the local authorities and obtain Empadronamiento, or official residence registration.

If you're in Madrid, visit this link to schedule an appointment. Choose "Padron" for the category and select "Altas, bajas, y cambio de domicilio en padrón" for the tramite section.

Bring your passport, rental contract, and any other required documents to the appointment. You'll fill out the application at the office, and you should receive your Empadronamiento right there.

2. Schedule an Appointment for TIE Application

To apply for your TIE, visit this website.

Select your province, and in the "Selección de Trámite" section, choose "Policía - Toma de Huella (Expedición de Tarjeta), Renovación de Tarjeta de Larga Duración y Duplicado."

Follow the instructions to schedule your appointment for the TIE application.

3. Gather Required Documents

Gather the following documents for your TIE application:

  • University acceptance letter
  • Empadronamiento (residence registration)
  • Photocopy of your passport biometric page and initial visa
  • Completed EX-17 form
  • Paid tax form 790 (code 012) here
  • Proof of appointment
  • Recent passport-sized photo
  • Proof of health insurance

4. Attend the TIE Appointment

Attend your scheduled TIE appointment on time. Your fingerprints will be taken, and you'll be given a "resguardo." Keep this paper in a safe place, as you'll need it to pick up your TIE in 30-45 days.

5. Pick up Your TIE

After 30-45 days, return to the immigration office with your "resguardo" to pick up your TIE.

6. Stay Informed About TIE Validity and Renewal

Keep track of the validity period of your TIE, and be aware of the renewal process if your study program extends beyond the initial duration of your TIE.
